After over a decade on the faculty of the MIT Sloan School of Management, Dr. Gruber launched Research & Planning, Inc. a management consulting firm.  R&P is now part of AppNet, a public (NASDAQ) eCommerce vendor. While president of R&P he managed consulting assignments with large banks, securities, money managers, and insurance companies.  Dr. Gruber in addition to consulting with large financial service firms, Dr. Gruber assisted many of the leading vendors to this industry including:  IBM, HP, DEC as well as data vendors to the industry such as Reuters, Telerate, and the Data Resources Division of McGraw-Hill.

In one assignment for a technology vendor he managed a survey of money manager use of information technology with a sample that included money managers with over $1 trillion in assets under management.

He also managed consulting assignments which would now be considered eCommerce including assistance to CitiBank and Chase in the launch of their treasury workstation products and Bankers Trust with a program to sell their loan syndication software (also an eCommerce application). In this securities niche focus he gave many talks at conferences and was widely cited in the industry literature. His securities industry clients included Institutional  Investor, the premier publication for money managers.
